Can bagasse be used to make paper?

Sugarcane is one of the main raw materials for sugar production. Bagasse, as the slag after sugar cane is pressed, has a rough and hard texture, accounting for about 24%~27% of sugarcane (including about 50% water content). For every ton of cane sugar produced, 2~3 tons of bagasse. Approximate analysis of wet bagasse shows that bagasse is rich in cellulose and less in lignin, so bagasse has great advantages as a fiber raw material.
About 50% of the fiber left in bagasse after sugar extraction can be used to make paper. However, some of the cane pith (myeloid cells) do not have interlacing force and should be removed before the pulping process. Bagasse fibers are about 0.65-2.17mm in length and 21-28μm in width. Although its fiber form is not comparable to wood and bamboo, it is slightly better than rice and wheat straw fibers. The pulp can be prepared into offset printing paper, cement bag paper, etc. after adding part of wood pulp.
At present, there are mature technologies using bagasse as an alternative raw material for wood to produce paper cup base paper, fully degradable paper agricultural mulch, and paper dining utensils.
Among them, the fully degradable paper agricultural mulch film uses 100% bagasse pulp, which can be recycled for papermaking and can be naturally degraded. It can solve the problem of white pollution caused by the use of polystyrene tableware for many years. It is considered to be the most promising. New achievements; food and beverages made of bagasse have high whiteness and tightness, good temperature and oil resistance, non-toxic and tasteless, can be completely degraded within three months, no three waste pollution in the production process, and greatly low production cost For example, in JXD's tableware factory in Sichuan, China, this kind of green tableware made of bagasse has already appeared, which has created excellent conditions for the development of the emerging environmental protection industry.
